One of my favorite games from my childhood is Zombies Ate My Neighbors! It was graphic, funny, and one of the more edgy games I was allowed to play at the time (I was just barely 7, give me a break.) My friends and I sank hundreds of hours into the game, never quite finishing it but making it super far none the less.
The announcement
Today, Tuned Out Games announced a “Spiritual Sequel” to the 1993 cult classic game. Introducing Demons Ate My Neighbors! A twin-stick 360° roguelite action-adventure game. Just like ZAMN!, DAMN! will be co-op and hearkens back to the feeling of kicking it with your teenage friends, exploring your town, and the trouble that ensues.
The world of DAMN! will be procedurally generated and there will be tons of loot and collectibles for you and a buddy. The other big thing to note is the dynamic soundtrack by Sonic Mania veteran Tee Lopes, Varien, Nice Legs, and Papoose!
While roguelite is becoming an abundantly used term and I am hesitant to see it applied to the Zombies Ate My Neighbors kind of games play. I can see how it could work and will remain optimistic, however. With its use of firearms and mentions about boss tokens for permanent meta upgrades, one can begin to get some Enter The Gungeon vibes. Big shoes to fill, but doable.
Demons Ate My Neighbors! is set to release in Q3 of 2021 for PC and Switch with a Kickstarter set for September 1st, 2020.
